Your workspace doesn't have to be fancy to be comfortable.

If you spend several hours a day at your desk, whether you're running a business, supporting clients, or working remotely, small improvements can make a noticeable difference.

Creating a comfortable workspace isn't about replacing everything you own or buying the most expensive equipment. It's about finding tools that make your day feel a little easier, reduce discomfort, and help you enjoy the time you spend working.

Over the years, I've found a few things that have become permanent fixtures on my desk. Some help with posture, others make long work sessions more comfortable, and a few simply make me smile every time I use them.

Here are some of my favourite workspace comfort upgrades.

1. Invest in a Supportive Office Chair

If there's one item worth investing in, it's your chair.

Long work sessions can take a toll on your back, shoulders, and neck. A supportive chair with adjustable height and lumbar support makes a huge difference, especially if you're sitting for several hours a day.

A comfortable chair doesn't have to be the most expensive one available, but it should fit your body well and encourage good posture.

A good chair is one of those purchases that can be easy to put off, but it's one I think is worth it. I spend a lot of time at my desk, so having proper support for my back makes those longer work sessions much more comfortable.

2. Raise Your Screen to Eye Level

Looking down at a laptop or monitor all day can quickly lead to neck strain.

A laptop stand or monitor riser brings your screen to a more comfortable height and instantly improves your desk setup.

Pairing a laptop stand with an external keyboard and mouse creates a much more ergonomic workspace.

3. Find a Keyboard You Actually Enjoy Typing On

If you type all day like I do, your keyboard matters more than you might think.

I'm a mechanical keyboard fan. There's something about those satisfying key clicks that makes sitting down to work a little more enjoyable. Whether you prefer louder clicky switches or quieter keys, there's a keyboard out there for everyone.

It's one of those small upgrades that can make everyday work feel a little more enjoyable.

I love a mechanical keyboard. There's just something satisfying about those clicky keys while I'm working through emails, writing blogs, or tackling client projects. Whether you like louder clicks or quieter keys, there's probably one that fits your style.

4. Switch to an Ergonomic Mouse

Your mouse probably gets just as much use as your keyboard.

An ergonomic mouse keeps your hand in a more natural position, which can reduce wrist strain during long workdays.

If you've never tried one before, it may take a few days to get used to, but many people never switch back.

It took me a couple of days to get used to a vertical mouse, but now I wouldn't want to switch back. When you use a mouse for hours every day, those little comfort improvements really add up.

5. Add a Monitor Light

One of my favourite desk upgrades has been adding a monitor light.

We spend so many hours looking at screens that good lighting really matters. A monitor light bar brightens your workspace without shining directly into your eyes or creating glare on your screen.

It also helps when working early mornings, cloudy afternoons, or later in the evening.

6. Keep Your Coffee Warm

This one has become an everyday essential.

I don't know how it happens, but I always seem to get caught up in work and completely forget about my coffee. By the time I reach for it, it's cold.

A mug warmer has completely solved that problem. It's one of those little desk accessories you don't realize you'll love until you own one.

If you're someone who gets into long stretches of focused work, it's honestly a game changer.

7. Always Keep a Notebook Nearby

Maybe it's the old school part of me, but I still love writing things down.

Even with digital task managers and notes apps, I always have a notebook sitting on my desk.

It's perfect for quick reminders, meeting notes, brainstorming ideas, or adding something before I forget it. Sometimes grabbing a pen is simply faster than opening another app.

I still have a little old school in me. Even with digital planners and task apps, I always keep a notebook on my desk. It's the quickest place to jot down ideas, meeting notes, or reminders before they disappear from my brain.

8. Give Your Feet Some Support

A footrest isn't something most people think about until they try one.

Keeping your feet comfortably supported can improve posture and reduce pressure on your lower back during long work sessions.

It's a simple addition that can make your chair feel even more comfortable.

Comfort isn't always about the big purchases. Sometimes it's the smaller additions, like a footrest, that make sitting at your desk for longer periods feel just a little easier.

9. Keep Your Desk Organized

A cluttered desk can quickly become distracting.

Simple organizers, cable management, and storage trays help keep everything within reach without making your workspace feel crowded.

You don't need a perfectly styled desk, just a system that makes it easy to find what you need.

I work best when I know where everything is. My desk isn’t always spotless, but having a simple place for cables, notebooks, and supplies helps me stay focused instead of searching for things.

10. Add a Few Personal Touches

Comfort isn't only about ergonomics.

Adding a small plant, favourite mug, family photo, candle, or desk accessory can make your workspace feel more inviting.

Your office doesn't need to look like something from a magazine. It should simply be a space you enjoy spending time in.

Those little details often make the biggest difference.

🖥️ From My Desk

I think every workspace should feel like your own. Mine usually includes a notebook, a favourite mug, and a few simple touches that make sitting down to work feel enjoyable.

If You Peeked at My Desk Today...

Here's what you'd find on my workspace almost every day:

✔️ A supportive office chair

✔️ Mechanical keyboard (the clickier, the better!)

✔️ Ergonomic mouse

✔️ Monitor light

✔️ Laptop stand

✔️ A notebook full of scribbled reminders

✔️ A mug warmer keeping my coffee warm while I get distracted working

It's not the fanciest setup, and I didn't buy it all at once. I've added pieces over time, choosing things that made my workday a little more comfortable. That's what I'd recommend to anyone building their own workspace too.

Your Workspace, Your Way

Every desk is a little different, and that's part of what makes it yours.

The items on my desk have been added over time, each one making my workday a little more comfortable or helping me work a little more efficiently.

You don't need to copy someone else's setup. Find the pieces that fit the way you work, and create a workspace that you'll enjoy sitting down to each day.
